When you think about fashion in Nigeria, I am sure that you all absolutely think that it is not good at all. Well, I can prove the contrast.
In Nigeria, there is a huge chasm between the poor and the rich people. It’s hard and unfair to say that the poor people can’t invest in fashion, they have other things to worry about. That’s the main reason why I have focused in this blog on the rich ones, who can afford themselves to think about some fashion guidelines.
The fashion in Nigeria shows a huge variety. It goes from casual, chic to sexy. Although there is a huge variety in clothing styles, you can definitely observe some culture traditions which apply for everyone, also for the rich persons. For example, women are obligated to wear a head-scarf. The colour is based on the clothes they wear.
Nigeria has implanted a new style: the Ankara and Lace fashion. The material of this clothes is primarily associated with Africa, because of the tribal-like patterns and motifs. Remarkable is that the colours of the clothes are very colourful. You can observe red, yellow, green, blue, and so on. Dark colours are acceptable but it doesn’t occur frequently. Nigerian people want to have an excellent presence, so shoes, handbags and statements such as huge necklaces can’t be missing.
Nigerian people are really fashion-addicted. There are also some events about fashion. In the capital of Nigeria ‘Lagos’, there is an annual fashion week for example. Well-known Nigerian designers get together to showcase their collection.
Here you can find a link with some pictures and information about the fashion week in 2014.

What I want to clarify is that it doesn’t matter how poor or rich a country is. Fashion is as cheap as you wish, it is a matter of willing and know-how.
