With the airplane crash from last week in mind, we flew to Germany. It is incomprehensible what happened with the 150 people. I need a hearty breakfast to change my mind a bit. Let us search for some real German breakfast.

A typical breakfast starts in Germany with a hot beverage such as tea or coffee with bread rolls (Brötchen) with a variety of toppings such as butter, marmalade or honey. German people also like some sausages (Wurst) and cheese (Käse) by their meal sometimes together with a boiled egg and a glass of juice. In my opinion this is a heavy breakfast so when you want it a bit healthier the Germans present you their popular cereals and Muesli mixed with yogurt or milk often topped with fresh fruits. Nowadays with the busy lifestyles the basic breakfast of bread accompanied with cheese or meat is also still common.

The German cuisine has evolved through centuries of political and social change with variations from region to region. Like in most of the countries I have already talked about, the ingredients and dishes vary by region. Some regional dishes have become popular in other international countries.

Haute cuisine has a high quality in Germany. It is, after France, the second country in the world with the most restaurants which have one or more stars in the 2013 Michelin Guide. So that is really significant. Germans try to eat heavy but also healthy meals. The head ingredients are potatoes together with bread and meat. Each region has its own way to prepare the potatoes. Some Germans eat them with bacon, beans and pears. Others prepare Pichelsteiner, a special stew made with three kinds of potatoes. In Berlin they eat the potatoes with bacon and spicy sausage.

Another popular meal in Germany is Sauerbraten. This is a large roast made of pork, beef or veal flavored in different ways depending on the region. For example in the Rhine river area the Sauerbraten is flavored with raisins and cooked in some spices and vinegar.

When you are a fan of apples, Germany is ideal for you because they are well-known for their desserts made with apples. If you are going on a holiday this spring to Germany, you have to try the asparagus with a sauce or in a soup, they are delicious there!
